The OBD-II standard
SAE J1979
SAE J1979 is the standard that defines how a scan tool asks a car for diagnostic data. Each car sold in the US since 1996 answers its requests through the OBD-II port, and Pelican reads them from nearly every car built since then.
Carmakers also add their own commands for data that J1979 does not cover, such as battery charge or tire pressure. These commands differ per vehicle. The OBDb was established to document these facts.
