About BMW

BMW is a German automaker with headquarters in Munich. The company dates its founding to the foundation of BFW on 7 March 1916. The main plant and headquarters are in the Oberwiesenfeld district of Munich. Herbert Quandt became a major shareholder and helped the company survive a takeover attempt in 1959.1

BMW entered car production in 1928, when it took over the vehicle maker Fahrzeugfabrik Eisenach. BMW bought the Rover Group in 1994 and sold it in 2000, but it kept the MINI brand. BMW obtained the brand and naming rights for Rolls-Royce motor cars in 1998. BMW revealed the X5 at the Detroit Auto Show in January 1999.1

The BMW i3 was the first series-produced fully electric BMW model.1

BMW cars sold in the United States since model year 1996 have an on-board diagnostic (OBD) system. European Directive 98/69/EC requires an on-board diagnostic system on new petrol cars from 2001 and on diesel cars from 2004.23
