About Honda

Honda Motor Co., Ltd. dates from September 1948. The company began as a small factory in Hamamatsu, Japan, and became known first for motorcycles. Honda entered the automobile market in 1963 with the T360 mini truck.12

Honda introduced the Civic in Japan in 1972. In 1973, the company added a Civic model with the low-emission CVCC engine. The Accord CVCC followed in 1976. It won the Car of the Year award in both Japan and the United States.2

CVCC stands for Compound Vortex Controlled Combustion. Honda presented the engine in October 1972. The engine burns fuel completely inside the cylinder, so the car needs no catalytic converter. In March 1973, the EPA held a hearing on the 1975 limits of the 1970 Clean Air Act. Honda and Toyo Industries (now Mazda) were the only automakers that said they could meet them.3
