About Hyundai

Chung Ju-yung and his brother Chung Se-yung founded Hyundai Motor in 1967 in South Korea. The company assembled British Fords under licence. Its first vehicle was the Ford Cortina, which it assembled at the Ulsan plant from 1968.12

Hyundai describes the Pony as the first Korean passenger car. Its history page dates the launch of the Pony to 1976 and the first export, to Ecuador, to the same year. A Guardian obituary of Chung Se-yung dates the Pony to 1974, so sources differ on the year.13

Hyundai began to export the Excel to the United States in 1986. In February 1986 the Excel went on sale there. Hyundai Motor America sold its 100,000th Excel in seven months. The company sold 168,882 cars in the United States in 1986, an industry record for an import distributor in its first year.34

Hyundai says it launched America’s Best Warranty, a 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain limited warranty, in 1998.5
