About Pontiac

Pontiac was a General Motors brand. GM created it in 1926 and named it after a local Indian chief. The first Pontiac was an inexpensive six-cylinder companion to the more expensive Oakland brand. Within GM, Pontiac sat above Chevrolet but below Oldsmobile, Buick and Cadillac.12

The GTO muscle car arrived in 1964, and the Firebird pony car followed in 1967. The Trans Am was a performance version of the Firebird. The Firebird ran until 2002. The Bonneville ran from 1957 to 2005, and the Fiero from 1984 to 1988. The Solstice roadster ran from 2006 to 2009.123

In 2009, GM announced plans to discontinue the brand by the end of 2010. The franchise agreements for Pontiac dealers expired on October 31, 2010. The last Pontiacs built were G6 sedans.45

Pontiac cars built from model year 1996 onward have the on-board diagnostic (OBD) system that the EPA describes for 1996 and newer vehicles.6
