About Toyota

Toyota Motor Corporation lists its date of establishment as August 28, 1937. Its head office is in Toyota City, Aichi Prefecture, Japan. The company grew out of the Toyoda Automatic Loom Works. Sakichi Toyoda invented automatic looms, and his son Kiichiro Toyoda led the work toward cars.12

In August 1957, an advance team from Toyota Motor Sales traveled to the United States to prepare exports. The team sent a Crown and a Crown Deluxe as model vehicles. American automakers launched compact cars from the autumn of 1959, and most dealers switched from the Crown to them. Toyota suspended Crown exports to the United States in December 1960. In 1965, Toyota developed the Corona model RT43L specifically for the U.S. market.3

Toyota launched the first-generation Corolla in Japan in 1966, and the Corolla became a bestseller in the mass market.4

The Toyota Production System rests on two pillars, jidoka and Just-in-Time. Jidoka means that a machine or an operator stops the line when an abnormality occurs. Just-in-Time means that the plant makes only what is needed, when it is needed, and in the amount needed.5
