About Holden

Holden was an Australian car brand owned by General Motors. It began in 1856 as a saddlery business in Adelaide. The company later made vehicle bodies and then cars.12

Holden launched the 48-215, called Australia’s Own Car, in 1948. The Commodore, introduced in 1978, became its best-selling vehicle.2

Holden stopped engine production in November 2016. The last Australian-built vehicle came off the line in October 2017. On February 17, 2020, General Motors announced that it would retire the brand by 2021. The brand ended in January 2021.123

Over its 164-year history, Holden produced nearly 7.7 million vehicles. GM Specialty Vehicles replaced Holden and imports Chevrolet models.2
