About Lada

Lada is a Russian car brand made by AvtoVAZ, a state-owned company. Fiat and Soviet authorities signed agreements in 1965 and 1966 that led to the creation of AvtoVAZ. The first model, the VAZ-2101, was a more rugged version of the Fiat 124 sedan.1

The Lada brand appeared in 1973 and was first aimed at export markets. It became the main AvtoVAZ brand for all markets in the 1990s. In Russia, the same cars were first sold as Zhiguli.12

Lada is the best-selling car in the Russian market. In Western markets, Ladas were aimed at the budget end of the market.1

Renault bought a minority stake in 2008 and became the parent company in 2016. In May 2022, Renault sold its controlling stake to NAMI, a state-owned entity, for one symbolic ruble.13

The current models include the Granta, the Vesta, the Largus, the Niva, the Iskra and the Azimut.1
