About Volkswagen

Volkswagen means “people’s car” in German. The Beetle began as a design for an affordable family car, which the German government ordered in the 1930s.1

Volkswagen built the original Beetle from 1938 to 2003. A total of about 21.5 million were made. The Beetle sold in the United States from 1949.12

In May 1974, Volkswagen presented the first Golf. It had front-wheel drive and replaced the Beetle.3
